The Spellford Cove Marina was just outside of town, separated by the main cove with a small rocky outcropping that protected it from the fickle ocean weather. A large parking lot with a smattering of cars was located next to a small cluster of administrative buildings. One of them had a weather-worn sign out front that read “Spellford Adventure Tours” in black script, and I went inside. Hunter was already there, and he grinned and made his way toward me as soon as I entered.

“Hey,” he greeted me. “I’ve already told the woman working the counter that we’re here. We board the boat in ten minutes. Your hair’s gone back to normal, I see.”

“Great. I’m excited. It sure has. The blue was a nice experiment, but that’s all it was.”

“Me too. What made you decide to do this? It’s a great idea, by the way.”

“Oh, you know, I just thought it would be a fun thing for the two of us to do together,” I said with a smile, feeling bad about the lie. But what could I do? Tell Hunter that the ghost of a woman whose death had been ruled accidental told me she was murdered, and that I was trying to figure out who had done it to her? He’d run away screaming, and I wouldn’t exactly blame him for it. “Maybe after this we could go grab dinner?”

“I’d like that,” Hunter said. “I’m surprised you were able to come out here today. Isn’t the bakery still open?”

“Yeah, but Sunday afternoons are slow, and Yoko is taking care of it. It’s called a work-life balance,” I added with a wink, and Hunter laughed.

“Fair enough. You’ve got the next two days off, too, don’t you?”

“That’s right. When are you flying out for your super-secret meeting with totally-not-the-CIA?”

“Tuesday. I should be back on Wednesday. Maybe even Tuesday night, depending on how things go.”

“So we’re hoping for Wednesday?”

“We are,” Hunter confirmed with a smile. “Two days of meetings means the second day is when we’re trying to get a deal sorted out.”

“Awesome. I hope it goes well for you.”

“So do I. It could make a huge difference in peoples’ lives if it does.”

Before I had a chance to respond, a man came out from behind the desk, dressed in jeans and a flannel, with a gray waterproof jacket over it. His brown hair was about half an inch long, plainly styled, and sure enough, he stood about five foot ten, with a typical dad-bod: not especially fat or skinny, but obviously not a regular gym-goer either. A perfect medium build.

Yes, this man described the killer perfectly.

“Hi, everyone,” he announced in a commanding tone, that of someone used to taking charge. “My name is Thomas, and I’m going to be your guide today.”

A few of the others gathered in the building lobby mumbled a hello, and Thomas continued. “Who’s excited to see some whales today?”

A couple hands went up, but that was it. “Now, that’s not nearly enough excitement. Let me try again.
